Phillip Harvey Spector was born in the Bronx, New York City, on December 26, 1939, to a first-generation immigrant Jewish family.

His father was an ironworker from Russia who late committed suicide on April 20, 1949.

He went to Fairfax High School where he learned to play the guitar. While he was in school, he joined a community of aspiring musical artists and formed a group the Teddy Bears. Later, Phil Spector started learning record production under the guidance of Stan Ross who is the co-owner of Gold Star Studios.

Phil Spector first marriage was to Annette Merar who was the lead vocalist of the group Spectors. In 1968, he married again to the lead singer of the band the Ronettes, Veronica Bennett. The couple divorced in 1974.

In 2003, he was accused of killing actress Lana Clarkson in his mansion. The trial went for six long years and finally, on May 29, 2009, he was found guilty, and the jury sentenced him to 19 years in the California state prison system.


In 1958, Phil Spector started his career by forming a group the Teddy Bears and releasing his single “To Know Him Is to Love Him”. The song was ranked number 1 on the singles chart of Billboard Hot 100. He was also the co-writer of Ben E. King’s song “Spanish Harlem”.

He has also produced many hit songs including “Corrina, Corrina” which reached to the 9th position, “Pretty Little Angel Eyes” which made it to the 7th, “Be My Boy” by the Paris Sisters which made it to the number 56 and “I Love How You Love Me” which made it to the top 5 in the Billboard Got 100 chart list.

In 1962, he formed a new record company whose first single “There’s No Other (Like My Baby)” was a huge success. Later, the second single of the company “Uptown” made it to the 13th spot in the charts.
