Born into a Jewish working-class family, Gloria Rachel Bloom saw the light of the day on July 3rd, 1941. She was born to a salesman father, Morris and a housewife mother, Stella in Philadelphia. She completed her schooling from Philadelphia High School for Girls. After that, she joined the University of Pennsylvania for her graduation and met her first husband there. She was married to Peyton Bray with whom she had a daughter, Lisa Bloom, who is also an attorney. The daughter was born on September 20th, 1961, and they filed for divorce shortly after.

After her divorce, Gloria went back to her parents and pursued her education. She graduated with a BA in English with honours in 1963 writing her thesis on black writers. She completed her Masters in 1966 and moved to LA, California where she lived in Watts. She was actively engaged with the LA Teachers Association and took up teaching jobs at Fremont High School and Jordan High School.

Gloria Allred was raped at gunpoint while she was on vacation in 1966 to Acapulco. She got pregnant through sexual violence and had a back-alley abortion because abortion was illegal for professional doctors, back then. She fell ill and hemorrhaged because of abortion and had to be hospitalised. It was due to these tragic experiences that she decided to dedicate her life to women’s empowerment.

Gloria married William Allred in 1968, completed her law degree from Loyola University School of Law and became a part of the State Bar of California in 1975. Although she divorced her husband in 1987, she retained the surname.

Career

It was during the 1990s that Gloria Allred started her professional career with a strong and powerful letter to the Senate Ethics Committee in 1992 regarding the sexual harassment allegations against Oregon Senator Bob Packwood. Ultimately, instead of her letter, the Committee expelled him, and she resigned.

Pioneering women’s rights from the beginning, Gloria also fought for the Yeaw v. Boy Scouts of America case in 1995 which was about determining whether an organisation has the right to exclude girls from being a member of the society. She was also involved with various high profile cases, like the famous O.J. Simpson murder trial having represented Nicole Brown Simpson’s family. She also represented Kelly Fisher in her case against Dodi Fayed in 1997.

In a landmark case which determined the rights of pregnant actors, Gloria Allred fought for actress Hunter Tylo’s case against Aaron Spelling who fired the former because of her pregnancy. The jury granted Tylo a price sum of $4.8 million.

In the 2000s, Gloria was involved in many important cases, including the one against Michael Jackson for holding his son over a hotel balcony and also, the sexual abuse allegations against the singer. She continued upholding women’s rights through the choice of her cases, especially ones which alleged famous male personalities of injustice and crimes against women. She was also actively involved in sexual harassment allegations cases against Bill Cosby, Donald Trump, and Roy Moore, among others.

Pertaining to her active involvement with the Hollywood industry and criminal cases against famous personalities, Gloria Allred has appeared on various Television programs. She has also headlined her TV show court, “We the People with Gloria Allred”. Recently, a documentary about her life titled, “Seeing Allred” was screened on Netflix.

Gloria Allred has been conferred with awards since the 1970s. She was awarded Outstanding Citizen Award in 1976 by SBPWC, Mar District-California. She was conferred with President’s Volunteer Action Award by President Regan in 1986. Throughout her illustrious career, she has received numerous accolades. Most recently, she was awarded the Elgy Award for her contribution to LGBTQ society and was honoured in IWF World Leadership Conference 2016.
